What is an Excel Macro or VBA
Excel and all Office products include a macro programming language called VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). The macro recorder allows you to record steps and in the process, writes the VBA code for those steps. The macro recorder is just the tip of the ice berg.
With macros we can create automated solutions to help reduce man hours, validate user tasks, link your office application and other 3rd party products and much more.
Some of the things you can achieve with VBA include:
- Form creation
- Customising toolbars
- Automation of repetitive tasks
- Linking to other products and database
- Web based data retrieval
- Automatic creation of charts/pivot tables and reports
- Sorting and manipulating data
- User validation.
- and much much more!
It is also possible to create add-ins using VBA. Addins make macros available to all of your workbooks. See Add-in Development for more details.
